Download CLASS Data

CLASS includes two sets of data for physical education- and nutrition-related laws. The first includes data from 2003-13. This set was created using state-level codified statutes and administrative regulations, as well as state physical education standards that are specifically incorporated by reference into the codified law. CLASS Maps and Profiles are based on these data using standard scoring criteria.

A second, enhanced data set has been compiled for 2008-13. This set also includes state-level codified statutes and administrative regulations, as well as any state physical education or health education standards that are incorporated by reference into the law using either specific reference or more general language. This enhanced data set provides more precision in the coding of some of the CLASS variables and is described fully in the Scoring Key & Variable Information document. With the exception of the PE Time Requirements variable, these data were only able to be compiled starting in 2008. The PE Time Requirements variable for each grade level using enhanced coding is available from 2003 to the present. Generally score differences are small, but researchers interested in this type of detailed coding of state law should consider using this data set.

School Nutrition Environment State Policy Classification System

CLASS Nutrition data sets are updated according to the most recent nutrition standards that affect the school nutrition environment. Occasionally, data are updated due to changes in policy or coding. Please keep in mind the following as you analyze data:

  • The competitive foods, reimbursable school meal, and nutrition education policies are classified according to grade level requirements at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Grade-level classifications are not made for the remaining topics.
  • A series of dichotomous tracking variables that might potentially enhance or inhibit implementation or impact the individual policy provisions are also coded for all nutrition policy variables.
  • CLASS scores reflect the law into effect in the specified year, not law creation date. The citations for source laws are available in the Nutrition Citation File below.

Physical Education-Related State Policy Classification System

CLASS Physical Education data sets are updated according to the most recent PE standards that affect the school PE environment. Occasionally, data are updated due to changes in policy or coding. Please keep in mind the following as you analyze data:

  • With the exception of recess time, policies for each topic are classified according to grade-level requirements at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
  • A series of dichotomous tracking variables that might potentially enhance or inhibit implementation or impact the individual policy provisions are also coded for the time requirement, staffing, and assessment-related variables.
  • CLASS scores reflect the law into effect in the specified year, not law creation date. The citations for source laws are available in the Physical Education Citation File below.
