Physical Education-Related State Policy Classification System

CLASS Physical Education data sets are updated according to the most recent physical education standards that affect the school physical education environment. Occasionally, data are updated due to changes in policy or coding. Please keep in mind the following as you analyze data:

  • With the exception of recess time, policies for each topic are classified according to grade-level requirements at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
  • A series of dichotomous tracking variables that might potentially enhance or inhibit implementation or impact the individual policy provisions are also coded for the time requirement, staffing, and assessment-related variables.
  • CLASS scores reflect the law into effect in the specified year, not law creation date. The citations for source laws are available in the Physical Education Citation File below.
